Global Partnership for Sustainable Transport and the Post-2015 Development Agenda High-Level Side Event

  • Overview

    This event will bring together a select group of leaders from all modes of transport, industry associations, civil society, Governments and the United Nations, to highlight how transport sector businesses can support the implementation of global sustainable development priorities.

    The Global Partnership for Sustainable Transport – an initiative focusing on the implementation of sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the recommendations of the UN Secretary General’s High-level Advisory Group on Sustainable Transport– will be soft-launched. This resource for companies and industry associations is intended to inspire broad-based corporate action and raise awareness among other stakeholders on the role of business in the transport sector.  A major deliverable of this event will be a list of actions the private sector can undertake to advance each sustainable development goal, highlighting notable corporate and industry examples. Co-convened by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the UN-Habitat, the International Road Transport Union (IRU) and the UN Global Compact.

    The IRU, as the global voice of the road transport industry, works towards achieving the twin goals of Sustainable Development and Facilitation of road transport worldwide. However, the IRU is not merely an industry interest group but defends the interests of economy and society as a whole.

    The IRU’s mission is therefore to facilitate road transport worldwide and ensure its sustainable development, notably by using vocational training to promote professional competence in the sector and improve the quality of services it offers.

    It defends customers’ freedom of choice between transport modes and the equal regulatory treatment of all modes, and promotes cooperation and complementarity with all other modes of transport.
