Samarco communicates with stakeholders on implementation of the Global Compact principles through its Annual Report 2002 and its website. Both the report and the website provide information on the company?s efforts in the area of environmental management, employee safety and security and various community involvements.
Some areas of focus as under Samarco?s Social and Environmental initiatives include respect for regional values, development shared with the community, programs with potential for sustainability, permanent monitoring with the clear definition of performance indicators, impact and results, and dissemination of information both internally and externally. In the area of environmental protection, Samarca?s efforts include controlling water and air emissions, waste management and water management.
Samarco?s Annual Report provides economic performance indicators (pages 48 to 51) and social performance indicators (pages 52 to 78). Pages 52 to 61 of the report describe the company?s policies and efforts related to its employees and all internal stakeholders. Pages 62 to 67 focus on Samarco?s social performance with respect to its suppliers and its clients. Pages 64 to 69 describe the company?s community involvements and its social programs (a list of all its social programs is provided in an annex to the company?s report). The report also includes environmental performance indicators (pages 79 to 89), as well as environmental projects, performance and focus areas. Child Labour is addressed on page 65 of the report.

In addition to its Annual Report, the company holds meetings with the communities it is involved with and other stakeholders. People can ask questions, air their doubts, present problems and suggestions, so that, together with Samarco, they can develop socially and environmentally responsible actions.
