Human Rights

    Sign the Women’s Empowerment Principles
    To promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace, market place and community, MEBO International signed the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) on June 1st, 2022. Joining the WEPs network, supported by UN Women, UN Global Compact, and companies with similar values, MEBO International is dedicated to drive positive outcomes for society and business. With leadership support from the top level, MEBO International will also incorporate gender equality dimensions into our endeavors aligned with the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, taking actions to improve lives and prospects across the world.

    Apply the Regenerative Medical Technology to Improve the Quality of Healthcare through International Actions
    The World Health Organization considers burns as a serious public health problem. Statistics show that, burns account for approximately 265,000 deaths annually, the majority of which occur in low- and middle-income countries. As a pioneer in burn treatment and regenerative life science, MEBO International has been using its Moist Exposed Burn Therapy (MEBT), a regenerative treatment for burns that has been proven to reduce morbidity and mortality for burn patients, to initiate international actions to improve the quality of healthcare for the public, especially women and children.

    · EWECCPN – Life Regeneration Action
    To implement the global strategy of safeguarding women’s and children’s health and reduce the suffering of women and children from burns, MEBO International joined the United Nations Every Women Every Child Partnership Network (EWECCPN) in 2016 and launched the EWECCPN – Life Regeneration Action to fulfill our commitment in countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, Egypt, Lebanon, the Philippines, and China through community engagement and partnership.

    · Doctors Training and Disaster Relief Programs Launched with the Clinton Global Initiative
    Driven by the mission to improve the quality of life for others, MEBO International established a partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative to apply our advanced medical technology to the most extensive fields to benefit more burn patients in low- and middle-income countries. Since 2015, MEBO International has launched doctors training and disaster relief programs in China, Latin America and the Caribbean, and plays an active role in promoting the development of international public health and international public welfare with a new philanthropic model.

    · Relief Programs Launched at the CRCF Rongxiang XU Regenerative Life Charity Fund
    To help more people in need, especially those in China where MEBO’s regenerative life science was originated, MEBO International and the Chinese Red Cross Foundation (CRCF) jointly set up the CRCF Rongxiang XU Regenerative Life Charity Fund, and launched a series of relief programs to provide medical and financial support for China’s vulnerable groups, including Children suffering from epidermolysis bullosa, left-behind children suffering from burns, and burn patients from economically disadvantaged families.

  • Improving Policies to Empower Female Employees
    After signing the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) in June 2022, MEBO International’s HR department has been improving its policies related to the empowerment of female employees. Policies related to paid maternity leave and paternity leave have been updated to incorporate the lasted developments in its operation country, and the duration of paid maternity leave is above the ILO Convention of 14 weeks paid leaves. Besides, policies regarding breastfeeding leave for female employees with children under 1 year, parental leave for employees with children under 3 years, as well as zero-tolerance policies to ensure a business environment free of violence, sexual harassment and exploitation, have been officially included into MEBO’s Employee Handbook.

    Joining the UN Global Compact’s Target Gender Equality Program
    To deepen our implementation of the Women’s Empowerment Principles and to strengthen our contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 5.5 which calls for women’s full participation and equal opportunities for leadership by 2030, MEBO International joined the UN Global Compact’s Target Gender Equality (TGE) programme, which started on August 23, 2022. With top level support from the vice president and two representatives from Human Resource and International Affairs, MEBO International has conducted performance analysis based on the WEPs Gender Analysis Tool, joined three capacity building workshops, and is planning actions to improve its policies for women empowerment.

    Implementing EWECCPN – Life Regenerative Action in Sichuan
    In December 2019, “EWECCPN - Life Regeneration Action” was officially launched in Sichuan, China, through a partnership with 15 local hospitals including Chengdu Pidu District People’s Hospital, Chengdu University Hospital, Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital, etc., but its implementation was postponed until early 2022 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. With the aim of improving the health of local people and the level of treatment in local hospital, programs including patient donation, clinical case collection and review, and academic research have been planned to implement in Sichuan province.

    Re-launching Wave of Restoration: New MEBT Training in Latin America
    In 2019, MEBO International launched “Wave of Restoration: New MEBT Training in Latin America” at the Clinton Global Initiative platform to address the need for increased medical and disaster preparedness in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through capacity building for healthcare professionals across the region, including doctors training in MEBT, and complementary disaster preparedness training, this program contributes to the reduction of burns as a serious global health program, and helps improve the quality of public health for people in Latin America and the Caribbean, including women and children who are most vulnerable in situations of burns, disasters and emergencies. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, doctor’s trainings have been transferred online, while offline training has been postponed until September 2022 when border control measures have been eased for international travel.

    Carrying out Programs to Relief the Suffering of EB Children, Left-behind Children and Burn Patients
    In order to practice the mission of protecting life and health, the CRCF Rongxiang XU Regenerative Life Charity Fund launched the “Care for Butterfly Children Project” to help children with epidermolysis bullosa (a rase condition that causes fragile, blistering skin) through nursing knowledge training, patient medication guidance, and financial support for treatment. The fund also set up a sub-project “One Yuan to Hold Hand with Little Butterflies” on two public welfare platforms, Tencent and Alipay, to raise funds and encourage everyone in the community to help EB children through public welfare.
    Faced with burn and trauma, left-behind children and patients from remote and poor areas are especially vulnerable. The Fund also carries out programs, including “Care for Burned Children from Families in Need”, “Care for Left-behind Children Suffering from Burns”, and “Relief Burn and Trauma Patients in Remote and Poor Area”, to provide medical and financial support for these vulnerable groups, to relieve their pressure of medical treatments, overcome the disease and move forward with hope.

  • 90 Clinical Cases Received Prize during the EWECCPN - Life Regeneration Action Expert Committee’s review, 60% of the Recipients were Female
    EWECCPN Life Regeneration Action in Sichuan, China (referred to as the “Action” hereafter), though influenced by Covid-19 outbreak in the province, has been a huge success in bringing together burn professionals for academic exchange and improvement. As of September 2022, the number of clinical cases submitted and reviewed by the Action’s burn experts have reached to more than 100, with 5 of them got the first prize, 13 second prize, 38 third prize, and 34 merit prize. Among the prize recipients, the proportion of women doctors and nurses was around 60%, signifying MEBO International’s efforts to empower female healthcare workers in their workplace.

    950 Healthcare Professionals Received Medical Training through Wave of Restoration: New MEBT Training in Latin America, more than 500 were Female
    Throughout the year, Wave of Restoration: New MEBT Training in Latin America has provided MEBT trainings for 600 healthcare professionals (mainly nurses, 80% are female) through online channels, and for 350 burn/trauma doctors and physicians (20% are female) offline. In general, more than 500 female healthcare professionals in Latin America and the Caribbean have benefited from our program between September 2021 to September 2022.

    80 EB Children, 48 Children and 43 Adults Suffering from Burns and Trauma in Poor Families received Support from the Rongxiangxu Xu Regenerative Life Charity Fund
    From September 2021 to September 2022, the Rongxiangxu Xu Regenerative Life Charity Fund (“the Fund” hereafter) has provided support for 80 EB children with Epidermolysis Bulloisa (EB) for their treatment and nursing needs.
    The Fund also provided medical and financial support for 48 children who suffered from burns and didn’t have access to primary medical care because of their families’ disadvantaged financial conditions. Among them, 20 of the children were from Nanyang, Henan Province, and 18 from Shaoguan, Guangdong Province.
    Adult patients suffering from burns and trauma also received donations from the Fund. Throughout the year, 43 patients, including 23 burn patients and 20 trauma patients from poor families have benefited from the help of the Fund, among them, the number of female patients reached 6 and 12 respectively, accounting for 42% of all the adult patients.

Labour

  • To ensure labour rights in the workplace and society, MEBO International actively responds to the Covid-19 pandemic to address labour risk in health and promote public health through public-private partnership. Against the backdrop of discrimination against women and minority groups, MEBO International also supports initiatives such as Time's Up and the Bay Area Council’s Committee on Diversity, Equality & Inclusion.

    Address Labour Rights-related Risks through Public-Private Partnership
    The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic is a huge threat to public health, and brings immense pressure to the functioning of corporations and society as a whole. To prevent the spread the virus and increase people’s ability to fight against coronavirus, MEBO International has built up a Covid testing site and actively supported Covid-19 vaccine rollout through public-private partnership.

    Collaborate with the Human Heritage Fund to Eliminate Employment Discrimination against Women
    To eliminate employment discrimination against women, and support working class women dealing with inequality in the workplace, MEBO International collaborates with the Human Heritage Fund and provides financial support for Time’s Up, an initiative kicked off by over 300 prominent actresses, agents, lawyers, writers, directors, producers, and many entertainment executives to combat sexual harassment and systemic sexism in the workplace.

    Support the Bay Area Council’s Diversity, Equality & Inclusion Committee to Promote Racial and Gender Equality
    As a member company of the Bay Area Council (BAC), as well as a member of BAC’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee (Kevin Xu, President and CEO of MEBO), MEBO International supports the operation of BAC’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committee, to develop recommendations and best practices to fight towards racial and gender equity. Addressing inequalities that communities of color, women and other marginalized communities faces, MEBO International works with the committee, civic and political leaders to promote and enhance workplace cultures of equity, inclusion and belonging.

  • Launching a Covid-19 Testing Site at Cal State LA
    A Covid testing site requires not only a safe and open site, but also testing technology and equipment, as well as health workers with professional knowledge. This public-private partnership, with the overall planning and coordination of the California Governor’s Office and the Los Angeles County Government, MEBO International’s funding, the technical support from California State University of Los Angeles (Cal State LA), and the provision of site from the Rongxiang Xu Bioscience Innovation Center, ensures that it has enough resources to deal with the challenges of COVID-19 and contribute to the improvement of people’s health and well-being as indicated by UN’s SDGs. With this Covid testing site, not only employees from MEBO International, but also all the residents from LA county, has easier access to covid testing, and residents’ awareness towards public health emergencies has been improved.

    Promoting Covid-19 Vaccine Rollout to Safeguard Employees
    After the Covid-19 testing site at Cal State LA has been turned into a vaccine center MEBO actively participated in the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines, including the promotion of employee vaccination to ensure employee health and workplace safety.

    Supporting Local Community through Donation and Medical Research
    Meanwhile, to improve public health and advance medical research related to Covid-19, MEBO is donating medical supplies and provided financial support to the local community, working with academic institutions such as BIDMC Hospital at Harvard medical school to establish databases for Covid skin-related manifestation, and initiate a study about the Covid toe syndrome.

    Donating for the Legal Defense Fund to Support Time’s Up
    To support Time’s Up initiative, MEBO International collaborated with the Human Heritage Fund to donate for the Legal Defense Fund, a fund under Time’s Up to help women in less privileged professions protect themselves from sexual misconduct and the consequences that may arise from reporting it.

  • 1/3 of Los Angeles Residents Were Tested at Cal State LA and Over 95% of MEBO Employees Got Vaccinated
    MEBO’s efforts to reduce the spread of the coronavirus and improve public health has created positive impacts both at the company and in a larger community. During its two months’ operation, the COVID-19 testing site at Cal State LA provided free COVID-19 tests for 1/3 of Los Angeles residents. Meanwhile, MEBO employees’ vaccination rate has reached more than 95% as of September 2022, much higher than the average vaccination rate of its operation community.

    Over 100 Hospitals Received Financial Support from MEBO
    As another part of MEBO’s Coronavirus (Covid-19) response, it has raised funds and provided financial support to over 100 hospitals including children’s hospitals and institutions aiding children and adolescents for the fight against Covid-19.

Environment

    Provide Medical Support for Extreme Weather Events through A Regenerative Medical Rescue Team
    MEBO has established a regeneration medical rescue team, composed of MEBT/MEBO experts focusing on disaster relief, to provide medical support in the first instance of extreme weather events and disasters such as forest fire, earthquake and explosion.

    Participate in UN Global Compact’s Climate-related Programs
    At the same time, as a company participating in the United Nations Global Compact, MEBO International actively supports and participates UNGC’s programs related to the climate change, such as the Climate Ambition Accelerator, to comprehensively access the company’s environmental footprint and contribute to the realization of carbon reduction targets aligned with the Paris Agreement.

    Support the Bay Area Council Foundation’s California Climate Resilience Challenge Initiative
    As a member company of the Bay Area Council (BAC), as well as a member of BAC’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee (Kevin Xu, President and CEO of MEBO), MEBO International is a strong supporter of the Bay Area Council Foundation’s California Climate Resilience Challenge initiative, to support innovative climate adaptation planning projects to strengthen the resilience of under-resourced communities across California to wildfire, drought, flood, and extreme heat events.

    Promote International Dialogue and Cooperation in Climate Change
    To promote joined research, training and dialogue in climate action, especially against the backdrop of U.S.-China suspending climate cooperation, MEBO International is planning to build a bridge between American and Chinese universities. Specifically, an academic webinar focusing on carbon reduction and climate change will be sponsored between Zhejiang University and the California-China Climate Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, with the aim to increase academic exchange and cooperation to deal with the global challenge together.

  • Joining the UN Global Compact’s Climate Ambition Accelerator Program
    To make progress towards setting science-based emissions targets and create a clear path to address the company’s transition to net-zero, MEBO International joined UN Global Compact’s Climate Ambition Accelerator program in August 2022. With support from the vice president, and active participation of two representatives from international affairs and international market, we gained a clear understanding of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the net-zero concept, learned how to set science-based emissions reduction targets to achieve net-zero by 2050 through capacity building sessions, global best practices and peer-to-peer learning opportunities. Looking forward, MEBO International will set our own Science-based emissions targets and implement emission reduction strategies to meet our ambitions targets.

    Supporting the California Resilience Challenge 2022 Grant Program
    To show our support to the California Resilience Challenge initiative, MEBO actively participated in its California Resilience Challenge 2022 Grant Program, which provides resources to local communities through the state, including community-based organizations, cities, counties, California Native American tribes, special districts, and other local and regional jurisdictions representing under-resourced communities.

  • Upon successful completion of the UN Global Compact’s Climate Ambition Accelerator Program, MEBO International will set our own Science-based emissions targets and implement emission reduction strategies to meet our ambitions targets, that is to achieve net-zero by 2050, and contribute to “limiting global warming to well-below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C”.

Anti-Corruption

  • MEBO International has undertaken anti-corruption efforts through its support for the American Science Initiative, and its endorsement on the education of criminalization and law enforcement, with the aim to reaffirm the importance of core values such as honesty, respect for the rule of law, accountability and transparency in promoting development and making the world a better place for all, as indicated by the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.

    Support the American Science Initiative to Reassure Transparency and Prevent Corruption in Science
    To reaffirm the importance of transparency in the fight against corruption in Science, MEBO International supports the American Science Initiative (ASC), which was co-initiated by the Kevin Xu Initiative at the University of Chicago, which is a think tank affiliated with MEBO International, and the Science & Society Program at Aspen Institute. Caused of the lack of transparency, the year 2020 saw public distrust of science contribute to the worst health crisis in modern history. Therefore, the ASC is to elevate science as a central part of American culture, providing access for Americans to engage in science, trust scientific evidence and rally together to tackle future pandemics, confront climate change, or adapt new technologies. By supporting ASC, MEBO International hopes to empower the American public with scientific knowledge, to promote the active participation and contribution of the public to scientific decision-making process, to enhance transparency in the public sector and prevent corruption in science.

    Endorse Education on Criminal Justice to Promote Law Enforcement Against Corruption
    The School of Criminal Justice and Criminalistics at Cal State LA’s Rongxiang Xu College of Health and Human Services, which was named after the founder of MEBO, Dr. Rongxiang Xu, and accepts financial support from MEBO International, provides criminal justice program and master’s program in criminalistics to help students begin their career in law enforcement or social work after graduation. Focusing on the socio-economic, cultural, and political factors that affect the administration of justice, programs at the School of Criminal Justice and Criminalistics are highly consistent with MEBO’s pursuit of anti-corruption and reflects the company’s efforts to address the issue.

    Fund for International Law Education to Foster Law Talent with World Vision
    MEBO International also sets up a special fund to promote international cooperation in law education. This fund provides scholarship programs for law students in Chinese universities to further their studies in the United States and establishes a platform for academic exchange and dialogue between Chinese and American scholars in the field of law and justice, encouraging solutions to our world’s most difficult challenges such as corruption.

  • Employing Early-career Scientists in Underserved Communities to Promote Transparency in Science Education
    To reassure transparency to prevent corruption in science, MEBO International would support the American Science Corps (ASC) to employ early-career scientists in underserved urban and rural communities "to situate [scientific] development in our values of equality, accountability, justice, and trustworthiness.” Specially, the ASC would administer civic science workshops, public events, and training programs to engage Americans on the nuances and assumptions associated with scientific research and discovery. It will also enable dialogue that redirects science toward problems that plague local communities but often remain blind spots for academic researchers.
    At the same time, potential ASC service members, who exist among Ph.D. students and postdocs whose academic job prospects have been diminished by the Covid-19 pandemic, would receive training from communications experts and behavioral and social scientists. While ASC’s content of training would include learning how to listen to community needs and engage in forums that scientists have traditionally avoided, such as places of worship, state and county fairs, farmers’ markets, town halls, local theaters, libraries, community colleges, and sporting events.

    Awarding “MEBO Center – US Davis Innovation Center Aggie Square Special Scholarship” to Chinese Students for Their Master’s Study in the U.S.
    In June 2022, MEBO International establishes the “MEBO Center – US Davis Innovation Center Aggie Square Special Scholarship” program at Wuhan University, and provided scholarship for a joint training program for master degree students in the law school of both universities. Up to five students who graduated from Wuhan University’s School of Law will be awarded to this scholarship, with a maximum of RMB 200,000 per person, to begin their Master of Laws (LL.M.) program at UC Davis School of Law. The joint education of legal talents between two world renowned universities will certainly play an important role in the legal, economic and development cooperations between China and the United States.

  • Deploy 7,000 ASC Service Members with $ 500 Million USD for a Pilot Year
    To counter misinformation, realize the goal of rebuilding transparency and public trust in science, the American Science Corps (ASC) is estimated the deploy 7,000 ASC service members for a pilot year with a cost of $500 million USD.

    Around 3,000 Students Graduate from the School of Criminal Justice and Criminalistics at Rongxiang Xu College of Health and Human Services Each Year
    The Criminal Justice Program, provided by the School of Criminal Justice and Criminalistics at Rongxiang Xu College of Health and Human Services, is one of the largest enrolled undergraduate programs. In the school year of 2019-2020, 1,587 students got their BA in Criminal Justice. While in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021, 1,6,19 and 1,427 students graduated the School of Criminal Justice and Criminalistics respectively.
