    To our stakeholders:

    I am pleased to confirm that Vodacom Tanzania Public Limited reaffirms its support of the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact in the areas of Human Rights, Labour, Environment and Anti-Corruption.

    In this annual Communication on Progress, we describe our actions to continually improve the integration of the Global Compact and its principles into our business strategy, culture and daily operations.

    We also commit to sharing this information with our stakeholders using our primary channels of communication.

    It is worth noting to UN Global Compact; Vodacom Tanzania PLC being part of a global company through Vodafone Group UK, aligns to the global standards of operations as required by the mother company across our supply chain ecosystem. Hence our policies reflect accordingly at local level.

Human Rights

    1. Protection of workers from workplace harassment and domestic violence such as physical, verbal, sexual or psychological harassment, abuse or threats. For instance: Vodacom has an internal domestic violence policy for protection of employees inside and outside the organization. Furthermore, there is a facility to enable employees to report on incidences anonymously through a dedicated Speak UP line for whistle blowing known as “Speak Up”- a phone line number dedicated to employees to report on issues of abuse and bribery acts, or breach of code of conduct.

    Sustainability Practices at Vodacom Tanzania Foundation- Corporate Social Responsibility Level.

    Human Rights:
    1. Promotion of mobile technology to facilitate quality education to students and teachers to improve learning outcomes in the country. The launch of E-Fahamu in 2021, a Free designed portal by Vodacom that provides online learning materials to students, teachers and anyone who hasn’t received formal education curating global and local content access from a mobile phone or computer desk. The portal has over 180,000 users.

  • Implementation
  • Description of concrete actions to implement environmental policies, address environmental risks and respond to environmental incidents.

  • 1. Recycling and recovering activities to manage the use of batteries running network towers through our supply chain management (such as working with authorized vendors) to reduce carbon footprint. The exercise is conducted under the supervision of National Environmental Management Council (NEMC).

    2. Other specific elements of e-waste management entail, periodic monitoring of Diesel tank operations to manage infrastructure leaks or spillage on landscape. Monitoring visits to reduce environmental effects on soil, water pollution, and Air pollution from base stations. The exercise includes air conditioning maintenance and life cycle review for end of life waste management.

    3. Since 2017 Vodacom has leveraged technology to ensure its operations are environment conscious, especially on its building premises.
    Ensuring water and energy is optimized through the use of technology by the means of installation of water sensor taps as well as sensor LED lights; functioning only there are people around the premise and active only on touch point.

    4. The practice extends further to the procurement and use of accredited energy saving printing and scanning machines which are a core resource for production for the company. In light reducing paper consumption.

    5. Education and awareness campaigns to employees on road, office and home safety to observe measures. At Vodacom, we have for instance the “Absolute Rules” which are eight road safety measures for safe driving instituted in the workplace for employees to adhere to while driving.

    6. On ground review on maintenance to reduce noise and odor pollution, emitted from sites to minimize air pollution and noise complaints from members of community.

    7. Vodacom has been at the forefront in providing innovative technological and digital solutions services in the interest of educating the masses to reduce paper consumption by redeeming air time instead using paper vouchers, through the M-PESA USSD code and Application. All awareness efforts for subscribers for reducing carbon footprint thru M-PESA services, data, etc.

    8. Vodacom takes into account during contractor selection of vendors/suppliers environmental controls.

    9. Applies legal compliance on its contracts 'Duty of Care', during procurement and planning processes.

    10. Environmental considerations taken into account during changes of processes, development of new facilities or during capital approval process.

    Environment Conservation through Vodacom Tanzania Foundation:

    1. Promotion of forest landscape restoration including dry lands and protected areas. For instance; execution Kijanisha Dodoma and Kijani Zaidi long-term program addressing impacts on climate change as a social development issue.

    2. Promotion on the use of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies to reduce over dependence on fuelwoods (charcoal/ firewood).

    3. Awareness creation to the general public on the need of forest restoration/ tree planting to mitigate the impacts of climate change, promote adaptation to the impacts of climate change through alternative livelihoods including social inclusion for women and youth.

    4. For the financial year 2020/21 the program has affected about 712 people directly with more than 2 million SMS messages disseminated to Vodacom subscribers for environmental protection awareness.

    3. Stipulation of anti-bribery and anti-terrorism in all Vodacom contracts and agreements for partnership obligation and responsibility to adhere to local and international laws.
