In this annual Communication on Progress, we describe our actions to continually improve the integration of the Global Compact and its principles into our business strategy, culture and daily operations. We also commit to share this information with our stakeholders using our primary channels of communication.

Human Rights
  • Assessment, policy and goals
  • Description of the relevance of human rights for the company (i.e. human rights risk-assessment). Description of policies, public commitments and company goals on Human Rights.

  • Giloil company limited is committed to protecting Human rights by creating awareness of the newly promulgated Kenyan constitution 2010.

    We are members of Federation of Kenya Employers, subscribed and represented in all International conventions. Any ratification passed by the federation is notified to us and the same flagged off internally through our Human Resource Department

    Our contract of employment issued to individual workers refers to this awareness, and goes further to orientation training during induction.

    We keep written policies on Human Rights that is communicated to the staffs and suppliers every other time

  • Implementation

  • Giloil Company has appointed the Human Resource Manager as the contact person to whom all human right violation cases can be channeled.
    Awareness posters are displayed in all conspicuous notice boards in the different departments of the company

  • Since its commencement we have not had any cases of human rights violations. Once every year, an independent party ( Bureau Veritas ) carries an audit that includes human rights issues. However, in bipartite meeting held every year between union and management, agenda on Human right is always mentioned as a preparedness in-case it occurs.

Labour

  • Giloil Co.Ltd has written policies on the following :-

    Giloil is a bonified members of federation of Kenya employers hence represented in ILO conventions
    We at Giloil have entered into a recognition agreement with a trade union through which all workers grievances are channeled. This is in line with our freedom of association policy
    Other policies in place include employment policy,Human right policy, Child Labour ,Forced labour, and Employment and non-discrimination policy.

  • Giloil Co. Ltd has recognized trade union in food industry namely Kenya Union of commercial Food Allied Workers (KUCFAW). It has different levels for addressing all labour violation from the shop floor up the the secretary General

    At national level Ministry of labour and Human development carries audit on all statutory requirement against which evaluation of compliance is measured

    However contract of employment entails this content which is overseen by the union representatives

  • Evaluation of employment right is monitored by :-

    Ministry of Labour and Human Development through an annual audit

    Union Common Bargaining agreement meetings which are either bipartite or tripartite involving the senior management of the company

    In future, management intends to carry an employees satisfaction survey upon which more clearer rating would be displayed.

Environment

  • Giloil Company limited has an Environment policy that states as below;

    At Giloil Company, it is our core belief that environmental protection is important to achieving our corporate objectives. Consequently we respect the objectives of Responsible Care and Sustainable Development as a commitment for the management and as a Responsibility shared by each employee.

    Our Principles

    At Giloil, we regard it as our responsibility to present and future generations to continuously improve our environmental performance.

    Every employee is expected to aid the prevention or minimization of emissions and waste.

    Economic and ecological considerations encourage us to use resources, materials and energy consciously.

    We strive to continuously improve with appropriate resources the quality of our activities and unconditionally comply with all legal requirements and internal directives. To this end, the environmental objectives are set as specific and measurable targets and their achievement is supported with the same diligence as economic goals

    Training of Environment management System Auditors has been carried. Awareness has been made to all stake holders
    Our periodic Analysis which include Effluent Quarterly analysis, Emissions and noise level measurement remain our core requirement
    In Kenya, Statutory Audits are a prerequisite. Giloil company limited has been keen in complying with this requirement this include National Environment Management Audit done annually, Health and safety/ Risk assessment carried out yearly among other law spearheaded by the county government.

  • Giloil Company limited has created awareness to the staff,customers and suppliers on the need to protect environment

    All packaging are made of recyclable materials,

    Basic procedures on energy saving are in place

    Disposal procedures are in place for all types of wastes.

    Procedures are in place to control emergencies such as spillages and other unexpected happenings.

    Recently Company installed a Bio mass boiler which is friendly to the environment unlike petroleum boiler used before. This has significantly reduced our emissions.

    Giloil has appointed two garbage collectors, from list of Locally approved solid garbage collectors, with quantified records kept for all solid disposal

  • Giloil Co. ltd has put measures to monitor every aspect of environment

    Water,Electricity and Steam generated is recorded on a daily basis and a report circulated to the relevant implementation bodies of EMS

    Analysis is carried out daily monthly,Quarterly and annually aiding in guiding the EMS system

    Compliance on statutory requirement is enforced as per the national law

    All solid disposal are quantified before it is handed over to the appointed/Approved garbage collector

Anti-Corruption

  • Description of the relevance of anti-corruption for the company (i.e. anti-corruption risk-assessment). Description of policies, public commitments and company goals on anti-corruption.

  • 4.1 It is Giloil’s policy to conduct all of its business in an honest and ethical manner. We take a zero tolerance approach to bribery and corruption and are committed to acting professionally, fairly and with integrity in all our business dealings and relationships wherever we operate.

    4.2 It is our policy that those we do business with take a similar zero-tolerance
    approach to bribery, tips, kickbacks and corruption in general.

    4.3 We are bound by the laws of Kenya, including the revised Anti-corruption Act 2011, in respect of our conduct at work. We must also comply with laws relevant to countering bribery and corruption in the jurisdictions in which we operate.

    4.4 Bribery and corruption are criminal offences and are punishable by up to seven years imprisonment and five hundred Thousand fines, and if the Company is found to have taken part in corruption we could face an unlimited fine . We therefore take our legal responsibilities very seriously and expect every stakeholder to do the same.

  • Giloil Company ltd has put in procedures that ensure money spent is accountable .It is ensured that all transactions are above board. Our finance department is the core finance control point. Major transactions have to be approved by the Managing Director .

  • Giloil Co.ltd has outsourced external audit firms that carry Company internal audit for our books. This evaluates the performance and identifies any suspicious payment.However there has been no corruption case identified nor have we had a court case related to corruption and bribery.
