Business Ambition for Climate and Health

Accelerate ambitious climate action and explore what the climate-health nexus means for business in order to become a catalyst for country-level action to deliver on the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Why Business Ambition for Climate and Health?

Businesses and investors have a critical role to play in responding to the climate emergency and protecting the health of billions of people from climate change by accelerating urgent climate and development action. 2020 offers companies and investors an important opportunity to unite behind the science to get the world back on track, creating an enabling environment for countries to submit their new or updated climate action plans in line with the Paris Agreement.

Consisting of two distinct workstreams, the Business Ambition for Climate and Health Action Platform is providing a collaborative space for companies and key stakeholders to tackle both climate mitigation and resilience. In 2021, its climate workstream drives further uptake of the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign and support companies to localize their public commitments through ambition loops. Another workstream helps mobilize private sector action that delivers co-benefits for climate and health and strengthens health resilience to climate change.

Building on a decade of work by Caring for Climate and the Health is Everyone’s Business Action Platform, the United Nations Global Compact is uniquely positioned to scale the progress made by business to date on global climate action and to translate it into business ambition and country-level action with the support of Global Compact Local Networks and UN partners. Platform outcomes will also feed into the larger non-state actor agenda of the Paris Agreement and its linkages to the SDGs.

Workstream I: Business Ambition for 1.5°C and NDC Enhancement

The Action Platform will drive further uptake of the Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign by supporting companies to take action in their operations and supply chains. Through the Science Based Targets initiative and in close collaboration with its partners, the Platform aims to close the gap between current contributions the Paris Agreement (NDCs) and what is needed to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. Companies will therefore work to enhance corporate policy advocacy to create Ambition Loops for the adoption of 2050 net-zero goals in key countries and help achieve NDC enhancements for COP 26.

Workstream II: Putting a Human Face to Climate Change

Tackling climate change is the greatest health opportunity of the 21st century: Climate change impacts on health are being felt today and current climate projections present dire health outcomes across the world. The Action Platform will put a human face to the climate crisis by helping drive the private sector in building health resilience to climate change. In close partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Platform will focus on a human rights-based assessment of climate-related health impacts and mobilizing joint action for a 1.5°C future of health.
