World Day Against Child Labour
(New York, 12 June 2008) – On World Day against Child Labour, the Global Compact encourages participants and Local Networks to take action to combat child labour. Launched in 2002 by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Day against Child Labour aims to raise awareness of the problem and to focus attention on actions required to tackle it. This year, the theme of the World Day is "Education - the right response to child labour", highlighting the importance of quality education to reduce child labour and promote economic and social development.
Global Compact business participants, Local Networks and other stakeholders can help address child labour in a range of ways, including by:
- Learning more about the problem of child labour: www.ilo.org/ipec/Campaignandadvocacy/WDACL/lang--en/index.htm.
- Becoming familiar with guidance material on eliminating child labour produced by the ILO Bureau for Employers Activities and the International Organisation of Employers: www.ilo.org/public/english/dialogue/actemp/projects/cl/guides.htm.
