(Zürich, 28 August 2006) – Representatives from Swiss business, civil society and the public sector met in Zürich today for the first public debate held by the new Global Compact Network in Switzerland. The meeting titled “The UN Global Compact – the solution to all old and new questions related to corporate responsibility?” was hosted by ICC Switzerland, one of the network’s supporters.
„We are observing a global increase in interest in the Global Compact,” said Professor Klaus M. Leisinger, President of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development and Special Advisor to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the Global Compact, in his opening remarks. “As it is rooted in widely recognized universal values, the Compact helps businesses immensely in defining the scope of responsibility for the impacts of their global operations.”
Leisinger further welcomed the establishment of a Swiss network by the
roughly two dozen business participants in the country. As in many other
countries, the emergence of an active network provides the much-needed momentum
to establish a global platform for learning and knowledge exchange between
business, government and civil society, he added.
