(New York/Maputo, 21 June 2006) – Representatives of the Mozambican private sector have established a steering committee for a national Global Compact network aimed at the promotion, guidance, planning and coordination of corporate social responsibility initiatives of participating companies.
Among other competencies, the steering committee will approve strategic documents of the Global Compact network in Mozambique, establish partnerships, and raise awareness around the Global Compact's ten universal principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption.
The Global Compact initiative was launched in Mozambique by UNDP in July 2003 at a ceremony honored by the presence of the former President of Mozambique, His Excellency Mr. Joaquim Chissano.
FEMA is supporting the steering committee which is constituted out of 3 private companies, a civil society organization, a representative of the Mozambican government and UNDP.
So far, nine companies have joined
the Global Compact in Mozambique: Mcell (Chair), BCI, BIM, MotorCare, Polana,
Vidagas, KPMG, Coca Cola, BP, Mozal.
