Bovespa, the stock exchange in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has launched the Corporate Sustainability Index, the first of its kind in Latin America. Developed with assistance from the International Finance Corporation, the index is composed of the stocks of 28 companies -- representing 35 percent of Bovespa's market capitalization. "The launch of the index reaffirms Bovespa's commitment to corporate citizenship, pursuant to the principles of the Global Compact, to which we have been a signatory since 2004", said Raymundo Magliano Filho, chairman of Bovespa. He added: "We are certain that this new index willstimulate Brazilian companies, and the financial industry as well, to incorporate environmental, social and corporate governance factors in investment strategies, in conformity with the proposals contained in the Who Cares Wins report, launched by the Global Compact in 2004".
