On 23 April, close to 400 representatives of Argentinian and international companies, government, civil society and the UN system gathered at the Biblioteca National in Buenos Aires for the formal launch of the Global Compact in Argentina.
Addressing the meeting, Carlos Tomada, Argentinian Minister of Labour, welcomed the Global Compact as "a starting point" and the "base for any consensus with the private sector." Other speeches were delivered by Bernardo Kosacoff, Director of CEPAL in Argentina; Ana Lía Piñeyrúa, Director of ILO in Argentina; Arturo Acevedo, CEO Acindar; Catalina Lonac, CEO Compañía Azucarera Los Balcanes; Luis Pagani, CEO Grupo Arcor; and Carmelo Angulo Barturen (UNDP), Resident Coordinator of the UN System in Argentina. The Global Compact Office was represented by Anton Stadler, Senior Advisor.
Participants also agreed to create an active Global Compact Network, to assist companies in implementing the nine Global Compact principles in their daily operations. It is further planned to contribute to the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals in Argentina through partnership projects.
