As part of an international research project on “The 21st Century NGO”, the Global Compact Office and SustainAbility convened a workshop at UN Headquarters on 3 April focusing on the topics of the accountability and governance of NGOs.
The all-day workshop – titled “Who Guards the Guardians?” – featured the participation of more than 30 non-governmental organizations and representatives from the Global Compact Office and SustainAbility.
Dr. Kumi Naidoo, Secretary-General of CIVICUS, delivered the keynote address. In addition, the meeting featured a panel discussion with the following speakers: Barbara Fiorito, chair of the board of Oxfam America; Lisa Jordan, program officer of Ford Foundation; Steve Viederman, co-founder of the Initiative for Fiduciary Responsibility; and Erik Whan, a director of Environics International.
The outputs and learnings from the workshop will be incorporated into the final report, scheduled to be published in June 2003 by SustainAbility, the Global Compact, and UNEP.
