NEWS & UPDATES

1. Global Compact LEAD to Launch in January 2011
Challenging highly committed companies to advance their implementation of the Blueprint for Corporate Sustainability Leadership, a new leadership platform – Global Compact LEAD – will be launched in January 2011. Designed to stimulate innovation and best practices in the implementation of the Leadership Blueprint's three dimensions, Global Compact LEAD aims to serve as an inspiration and motivation to the wider universe of Global Compact participants. Global Compact LEAD will initially be comprised of approximately 50 companies that were invited to join the platform based on their strong history of engagement and leadership in the Global Compact. 2. Investors Call for International Action on Climate Change
Citing potential GDP losses of up to 20 per cent by 2050 and the attractive economic benefits of shifting to low-carbon and resource-efficient economies, investors released a statement (16 November, London) calling for national and international policies that will encourage private investment in low-carbon technologies. The statement was signed by more than 250 investors from around the world with collective assets totaling over US$ 15 trillion. More.

3. Anti-Corruption Conference Underscores Importance of Global Compact Guidance
The 14th International Anti-Corruption Conference (13 November, Bangkok) concluded with a pledge by attending nations to accelerate efforts to fight corruption and fully honour existing anti-corruption agreements. The importance of transparency and disclosure were stressed, with key resources to facilitate business disclosure identified, including the UN Global Compact Guidance on Reporting on the 10th Principle Against Corruption. 4. New Phase of Business and Peace Initiative Launched
The Global Compact and PRI have launched a new Business and Peace initiative to encourage and support companies in their implementation of the Guidance on Responsible Business in Conflict-Affected and High Risk Areas: A Resource for Companies & Investors which was launched in June 2010. Moving forward, the Global Compact and PRI will promote wider understanding of the Guidance, support company and investor efforts through a pilot project, and develop, document and share challenges and lessons learned. 5. CEO Water Mandate Convenes Sixth Working Conference
The sixth working conference of the CEO Water Mandate (15-17 November, Cape Town) was convened in partnership with the Global Compact and the Pacific Institute. The conference focused on three topical issues aligned with the declared workstreams of the CEO Water Mandate: water and public policy; water disclosure; and water and human rights. The conference featured the release of new resources to advance global water stewardship. More

6. First Asia Forum Held on Responsible Management Education
Faculty members and administrators from leading Asian business schools gathered (5 November, Seoul) to call for a recalibration of management education based on values and principles of human dignity, community and common good as a means to implement PRME in Asian business education. The Forum provided a platform for collaboration and exchange of best practices among participants. More.

7. Private Sector and International Agencies Partner to Tackle Micronutrient Deficiencies
BASF, the Micronutrient Initiative, and the Global Compact held a technical partnership dialogue to address malnutrition among the world's most poor (9 November, New York). The event fostered discussion among nutrition stakeholders to raise awareness, create a learning platform and initiate programmes that address hunger and malnutrition worldwide. More.
 
8. Global Compact Board Deliberates Strategy, Integrity Measures
The Global Compact Board convened at UN Headquarters for its third meeting in 2010. Topics covered included the Global Compact 2011–2013 strategy, integrity measures and the Foundation for the Global Compact. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, as the Board’s chair, addressed the meeting, stressing that the Global Compact is well positioned to mobilize support from the private sector in support of UN goals. 9. Participant Status: New Signatories, COPs and Delistings
In November, 88 companies and 37 non-business stakeholders joined the Global Compact. 29 companies were delisted for failing to communicate on progress. The largest companies (by employee number) to join during the month were: Kimberly - Clark Corporation (USA), Shin-Etsu Chemical Co., Ltd. (Japan), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. (India), LM Wind Power (Denmark) and Duropack GmbH (Austria).
       
    Total figures as of 30 November:

  • Business participants: 6,262
  • Non-business participants: 2,418
  • COPs received: 9,872
  • Delisted business participants: 1,719

ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

1. Draft Guiding Principles for Business & Human Rights: Open for Consultation
The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Business and Human Rights, Professor John Ruggie, posted the draft “Guiding Principles for the Implementation of the UN ‘Protect, Respect and Remedy’ Framework” to an online consultation forum. The Guiding Principles elaborate and clarify for companies, states and other stakeholders how they can operationalize the framework, by taking practical steps to address business impacts on the human rights of individuals.

The forum, intended to gather views from a broad range of stakeholders, will remain open until 31 January 2011. More information.

2. The Children’s Rights and Business Principles Initiative: Call for Expressions of Interest
This joint effort of the Global Compact, UNICEF and Save the Children aims to develop a set of principles based on practical actions business can take to respect and support children's rights in the workplace, marketplace and community. The initiative has launched regional and country-level consultations both online and in person.

3. Endorse the Cancún Communiqué
Organized by The Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change, the Cancún Communiqué is a progressive business statement on climate change which makes the case for action with renewed urgency. The Global Compact is a partner of the Communiqué.

1. Panel Discussion on International Anti-Corruption Day (9 December, New York)
Held on International Anti-Corruption Day, this high-level panel discussion will bring together business executives, institutional investors and international business associations committed to furthering the discourse on the role of private sector in the fight against corruption.
