NEWS & UPDATES

1. NYSE Euronext Joins the UN Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative
NYSE Euronext, parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, announced (24 July) that it will join the UN Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative to promote sustainable capital markets. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon rang the NYSE closing bell to commemorate the occasion and commended the company for its commitment to improve corporate behaviour and promote sustainable investment. 2. Chinese Business Representatives Commit to Address Climate Change
Chinese business leaders publicly announced their commitments to address climate change and promote low-carbon development at the China Summit on Caring for Climate (29-31 July, Beijing). Hosted by the Global Compact Network China and organized by the Global Compact Promotion Office of China Enterprise Confederation, the meeting convened senior business leaders, chief executives, UN representatives and members of the Chinese Government. At the summit, leading representatives from the Chinese business community presented a statement declaring that companies should “address climate change and reduce pollution and emissions” and proposing seven action areas for Chinese companies. 3. Global Compact Enters Media Partnership with Guardian Sustainable Business
Ahead of the Leaders Summit, the Global Compact has joined forces with Guardian Sustainable Business (GSB), which includes serving as an official launch partner of GSB’s U.S. edition. GSB is hosting a dedicated Leaders Summit webpage, featuring original pieces by Executive Director Georg Kell, key speakers and experts, as well as original reporting by GSB’s editorial team. More.

4. Global Compact Expels 99 Companies in First Half of 2013
The Global Compact announced (1 July) that it has expelled 99 companies in the first half of 2013 for failure to communicate progress for at least twcconsecutive years. These expelled companies represent three percent of the 3,288 participants due to submit a Communication on Progress (COP) within the first six months of 2013. At the same time, the rate of companies joining the initiative this year is more than six times the rate of expulsions. More. View the list of companies expelled.

5. Participant Status: New Signatories, COPs and Delistings
In July, 148 companies and 61 non-business stakeholders joined the Global Compact. 13 companies were expelled for failing to communicate on progress. The largest companies (by employee number) to join during the month were: Johnson & Johnson (USA), China Nonferrous Metal Mining (Group) Co., Ltd. (China), Sandvik AB (Sweden), LIXIL Group Corporation (Japan), Celulosa Arauco y Constitucion S.A. (Chile), Tokyo Electron Limited (Japan), China National Aviation Fuel Group Corporation (China), CWS-boco International GmbH (Germany), Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Limited (South Africa) and Gente Oportuna (Colombia).

Total figures as of 31 July:

  • Business participants: 7,644
  • Non-business participants: 3,984
  • COPs submitted: 21,512
  • Expelled business participants: 4,173

ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

1. Provide Input: Sustainable Agriculture Business Principles Consultation
All are invited to participate in the development of the Sustainable Agriculture Business Principles by providing feedback on the White Paper. We are interested in receiving input specifically on the outcomes that sustainable agriculture business principles should aim to achieve; the factors key to achieving these goals and the actions that are needed.

2. Provide Feedback: Corporate Water Disclosure Guidelines
The Public Exposure Draft of the CEO Water Mandate’s Corporate Water Disclosure Guidelines provides the first common approach to corporate water disclosure. The Mandate is conducting an online survey to determine how the guidelines have been working in practice and what areas need refining for greater effectiveness.

3. Contribute to the Knowledge Gateway for Women’s Economic Empowerment
The Knowledge Gateway for Women’s Economic Empowerment is a global knowledge, innovation and partnership platform for women’s economic empowerment developed by UN Women with the support of the Government of Canada. The Gateway will bring together a global multi-stakeholder group of governments, businesses, civil society and international organizations to mobilize knowledge, discussions, networking and learning opportunities to support the women’s economic empowerment agenda.

UN Global Compact participants are invited to register, contribute tools and resources, and propose topics for discussion to the Knowledge Gateway (www.empowerwomen.org). For more information, please contact knowledge.gateway@unwomen.org.
